With Hall County Schools set to re-open on Aug. 7 for the 2026-2027 school year, school district officials and local law enforcement are reminding area motorists to prepare for increased school bus traffic on county roadways.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur students deserve a safe journey to and from school,\u201d said Billy Wells, Director of Transportation for the Hall County School District. \u201cWe are asking motorists to take personal responsibility as they commute during the mornings and afternoons while our school buses are on the roads, picking up and dropping off students. At the same time, we want them to remember many of our school buses are equipped with stop-arm cameras for added safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stopping for a school bus with the stop-arm extended is Georgia law, yet too many drivers continue to ignore the requirement. This year, the school district has partnered with Verra Mobility to upgrade its school bus stop-arm safety program. Fifty school buses will be equipped with stop-arm cameras at the beginning of the school year, with plans to expand the program by adding more buses as soon as feasible.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, the school district launched a camera program, but we quickly realized during the warning phase that we didn\u2019t have adequate manpower in our courts to handle the volume of citations that would be generated,\u201d said Capt. Michael Mount of the Hall County Sheriff\u2019s Office Uniform Patrol Division. \u201cOur deputies continued to watch for violators and ticketed motorists who failed to comply with the stop-arm law, but we certainly missed some violations. Now that we have worked out the logistics, we are confident we can catch more drivers who neglect to stop for school buses that are loading and unloading students.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the re-launch of the program, motorists will have an eight-week warning period to become familiar with the regulations. After the warning period ends, drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus will be subject to fines of up to $1,000, in accordance with OCGA \u00a740-6-163.<\/p>\n

How does it work?
\nWhen a school bus extends its stop-arm, the camera system automatically detects vehicles that illegally pass the stopped bus within the enforcement zone. If a violation occurs, the system records video and captures images of the vehicle, its license plate, and the extended stop-arm. Law enforcement reviews all video evidence and license plate images before approving a citation. If approved, a notice of violation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

How much is a citation?
\nUnder Georgia law (OCGA \u00a740-6-163), motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus may be fined up to $1,000.<\/p>\n

Will it affect my driver’s license or insurance rates?
\nNo. Violations captured by the stop-arm camera system are considered civil infractions and are not reported to the Georgia Department of Driver Services or to insurance companies. They do not add points to a driver’s license or affect insurance rates.<\/p>\n

Where do the citation fees go?
\nRevenue generated through citations helps fund the operation of the program, including camera maintenance and violation processing. The program is designed to be self-sustaining. In accordance with Georgia law, any surplus revenue may only be used to support local public safety initiatives.<\/p>\n

What about data and privacy?<\/p>\n

The stop-arm camera system is designed to capture only the rear license plate of the violating vehicle and the surrounding evidence necessary to document the violation.
