Free Home COVID Tests (Update)

in District News

The district wanted to make you aware of the following opportunity:

Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests. The tests are completely free. Orders will usually ship in 7-12 days.

Please go to the following link for details:

https://www.covidtests.gov/

Families and Team Members,

The federal government’s recent initiative to provide all Americans with free home tests for COVID has raised questions among stakeholders. Please see the following guidance below:

  • The purpose of home tests is to decrease the spread of COVID infections.
  • If the home test is positive, the individual should stay home and separate from others within the household. Additionally, they should consult their healthcare provider.
  • It is important to remember that a negative home test does not rule out other infections, which may require treatment. Waiting 24 hours to repeat the test may increase the reliability of the negative results.
  • When conducting home tests on children, always consult your healthcare provider. Children may have more than one type of infection and only a professional assessment by a healthcare provider will give you assurance that the child has received the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Positive home test results should be shared with the school nurse. Students and staff who test positive at home will be instructed to isolate at home for five days, and if symptoms improve and they are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication, they may return on day six through ten wearing a mask and receiving a daily temperature check.
  • Home test results may not be used to end mask wearing and daily temperature checks for individuals identified as direct contacts. These individuals must continue to wear a mask for the required 10-day period.
  • Due to the margin of error associated with home testing, positive results are not reported to the DPH, nor does the district conduct contact tracing on individuals with a positive home test result. Individuals who believe they are a close contact of someone who has received a positive home test result are strongly encouraged to wear masks and monitor their health for the normal 10-day period.

If you have further questions regarding home testing, please contact your school’s nurse.
