i2 - the innovation institute

i2
the innovation institute
at West Hall High School

Imagine a classroom from the 1950’s and 1960’s in America.  In this scene, picture a teacher at the front of the classroom with all of his or her students sitting quietly at their desks.  The students are patiently waiting with pencil, paper and book in hand for the teacher to fill their minds with all the information that they need.  In this classroom, there is a sincere focus on a drill and skill learning with very little room for creative thought.   Learners are more often than not working in isolation to learn what they have been tasked to learn with no idea how it might help them in the future.

Fast-forward to the 21st century where we’ve learned that it is more effective if teachers guide students in discovery rather than stand at the front of the classroom and tell information.  That if students are charged with completing a task that is outcome based rather than time based, with a focus on real world application – more is gained.  We’ve discovered that projects, active collaboration and creative thought are some of the ways that children make connections and take ownership of their education.  This is what i2 – the innovation institute at West Hall High School is all about.

Through a collaborative and integrated teaching model, i2 is designed to be a learning experience like none other.  Based in part on the concept behind the Da Vinci Academy, the innovation institute’s mission is to take what has been accomplished at DVA and build from it in a high school setting.  Using some of the highest levels of technology in our Innovation Research Facility, the sky is the limit for what our students will be able to accomplish.  Student inquiry, creativity and individuality will be placed at a premium and will guide our student’s educational experience.  This program’s name was chosen very carefully in an attempt to convey our purpose – at the innovation institute, we will explore and emphasize the Georgia Performance Standards by immersing students in their language, meaning and implication – but we intend to allow these standards to take flight through the creative, imaginative and innovative efforts of our students.
