About The Bowl
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl was created by Helen Ruffin, a Media Specialist in Dekalb Co. who wanted a fun competition to test students knowledge on a list of selected books. The competition consists of a panel of five students per team who compete to answer questions from the appointed booklist. The event lasts only one day (usually in early February), but the Reading Bowl Team will meet one day each week after school up until competition time. You don’t have to read all 20 books on the booklist to be a part of the team, but Mrs. Losch encourages you to read as many as you can. The more we read, the more knowledgeable we’ll be at competition! Official Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Web site

Competition
Each school participating will have a team of five students who each compete in six rounds of questions. Each round will have ten questions from any of the 20 books on the booklist. Teams receive 10 points for each correct question answered. There is no penalty for wrong answers. The points accumulate throughout the six rounds and the team with the most points at the end of the rounds wins. When a school has more than five students on a team, the team members rotate each round of questions. The winning team in our division will continue on to compete at a state level competition.

Meetings
Once a week the Reading Bowl Team will meet after school with Mrs. Losch in the media center to discuss the appointed books (starting in October). We will have snacks and play quiz games to test our knowledge. We will also hold a “mock” competition to determine who are strongest competitors are. The competition day is on a Saturday, so we will meet at school early in the morning and ride the bus over to competition. After competition we will eat lunch and celebrate our success!
