Things to Know About the Media Center

Welcome to North Hall Middle School! The media center staff looks forward to getting to know you and helping you succeed in school. Please don't hesitate to ask for assistance in selecting and finding material.

HOURS
The media center opens for students at 8:10. Students may come to the media center at any time during the day with a signed agenda book. The student's name, purpose of library visit, and teacher's signature should be in the agenda. A Media Center staff person will sign and put the time on the agenda when the student is ready to leave the media center, when asked. Students may stay in the media center 15 minutes to check out books or magazines or as a reward for classroom behavior.: Students may stay 30 minutes for research projects.

WHAT YOU CAN CHECK OUT
Students may check out three items at any one time. This can be three books or combination of a regular library book, one magazine, or one reference book. Regular library books are checked out for two weeks. Magazines and reference books are checked out for one day. Magazines can be checked out anytime during the day, but reference materials can be checked out only after 3:00 and returned the following morning. You may check out a maximum of two Accelerated Reader books at a time. Accelerated Reader books are identified with yellow stickers and are located on the left side of the media center.
ABOUT BARCODES
Students are issued one free library barcode per year. This barcode should be placed in your agenda book by your teacher. It is necessary that you have your agenda book to check out materials. The only exception made is if your teacher is with you and he/she requests that you check out a book for a class assignment. If you lose your barcode, you must have an agenda book to buy a replacement barcode. Replacement barcodes cost .50. Replacement agenda books are purchased in the counselor's office.

Students should memorize their library barcode number. This number is used as your Accelerated Reader number, STAR number, and computer lab number. You will use this number for all three years at North Hall Middle. Please don't tell other students your number.

LIBRARY CARD CATALOG
The library card catalog is computerized. All computers in the library have the program to look up books. You should go to start, program, Winnebago Spectrum Client to look up books. The regular fiction books are located on the back wall of the media center. The regular non-fiction books and reference books are located on the right side of the media center. The Accelerated Reader books are located on the left side of the media center. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
When you check out materials in the media center, you are responsible for their return. Please don't check out materials for other students. If a material is lost, it will be the responsibility of the student who checked out the material to pay for it. Students who have books that are overdue at least two weeks at the end of the 9 weeks will be subject to loss of privileges in the extracurricular school environment. They will also either have to pay for the book, or return a signed parent letter.

ABOUT THE INTERNET AND GAMES
Students will not be allowed to use the Internet in the media center without direct classroom teacher supervision. You must have a signed Internet permission form on file in the library to use the Internet in the media center. You are not allowed to play games on the Internet in the media center. However, we do have three programs that are fun to use. These programs are Math Blaster, Typing Tutor and Word Muncher.

EDUCATIONAL WEBSITES
There are two web sites which are very helpful to students:

www.galileo.usg.edu The Galileo web site is a research data base and is password protected. The current password is available through the Media Specialist staff. Galileo password is always displayed in the window behind the circulation desk.

www.gcic.edu The Georgia Career Information Center is also password protected. The user name and password is also posted in the Media Center. This website has a tremendous amount of information on occupations in Georgia.
