Coming Soon! Mandarin Chinese at MVES

Hall County Board of Education is providing Mount Vernon Elementary with Mandarin Chinese classes for our students beginning in the next two weeks.  Students in grades 3-5 will receive this language instruction during their connections time.  Grades K-2 will receive an introduction to the language in small daily increments according to their grade level schedules.  Our new Chinese teacher is Miss Lu Yan.  She is excited about teaching our students a new language!

Mount Vernon will also continue to work with North Hall High School IB students to teach introductory Spanish to our 1st grade classes (this introduction to the Spanish language began last year in kindergarten).  We are very excited about these opportunities for our students to learn a foreign language.

Board Presentation for 5th grade pilot project
As we have searched for a charter initiative for our school, we have carefully researched many different types of programs and initiatives.  Our staff members wanted to develop a charter that would benefit the students in our community.  This pilot project will be implemented for school year 2010-2011 in 5th grade.  Our 5th grade classrooms will be set up as project-based learning classrooms with authentic assessments.  This means our students will be doing more hands-on projects (at school, in the classroom) that incorporate several academic areas.    Both teams will use more technology and continue to study the full 5th grade curriculum in all academic subjects.  Our students will develop digital portfolios as part of their projects.   Research has shown that we need to prepare our students for future jobs that are more project-based and involve problem solving.  We must continue to improve our efforts to provide 21st Century classrooms to prepare our students to be successful in middle school, high school, college, and their careers.

All 4th grade students/upcoming 5th grade students were surveyed in April through the Renzulli computer program to determine their learning styles and interests.  Classroom placements were determined by learning styles and interests.  We are hoping that this will make learning more interesting, engaging, and meaningful to our students.  Multi-disciplinary, thematic projects will have a focus either on the humanities (drama, music, art, social action, kinesthetics) and/or on STEMS (science, technology, engineering, and math). Most projects will be used by both teams, regardless of the focus.  Students will find their classmates share common interests and learning styles to make lessons more meaningful and more engaging.

All 5th grade teachers will receive professional development over the summer and throughout the year to assist in the implementation of this pilot project.  As we have searched for a charter school program for Mount Vernon Elementary, it is our hope that the success of this initiative will allow us to apply for charter status in the future.

Yearbook Information-Updated 8-9-10

Yearbook Update 8-9-10

We received a shipment of the replacement yearbooks, but they were not corrected as promised.  The LifeTouch Territory Manager picked up the shipment to send back to the warehouse for the promised hardback yearbooks for our 5th grade students and parents in K-4 who ordered a new cover.  We hope the corrected shipment will arrive sometime this week.  We will keep you posted.  Please direct any questions to Nuala Aiken at LifeTouch at 770-736-1749.
