Mt. Vernon Elementary School, in cooperation with the parents and the community, provides a creative learning atmosphere which empowers students to develop knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible, visionary, independent thinkers who strive for excellence.
Mt. Vernon's staff believes :
A student's self-esteem is strengthened by cooperation and mutual respect among and between students and staff.
Students, teachers, parents, and the community share the responsibility for the preservation of our country's ideals and for the protection of our environment.
Challenging expectations encourage children to strive for higher levels of success.
A safe, supportive, physically comfortable environment is conducive to learning.
Students can make appropriate decisions when given consistent expectations and consequences.
Technology can provide individualized instruction, learning, and evaluation.
Evaluation should include objective measures and performance based assessment.
Curriculum and instruction should be developmentally appropriate, should incorporate hands-on creative activities, and relate to real world experiences.
