PIA (Printing Industries of America) has awarded 3 Johnson Graphic Communications Students, Grayson Anthony, Desmond Hammond, and Jessie Reyes their top honors for Graphic Designs they submitted.
Students submit designs or printed products to the Print Excellence Award Competition in May sponsored by the Printing and Image Association of Georgia, (PIAG). Student entries who win the “Best of Category” at the state level, are entered at the national level in June sponsored by the Printing Industries of America. Students may be awarded a Certificate of Merit, Certificate of Recognition, or the Best of Category-the Benny.
A small percentage of entries receive the Certificates but only one entry receives a Benny. One Benny is given to each competition category. Desmond Hammond won the Benny for the best high school entry. There is only one Benny for all high school entries regardless of the number of high school categories. These awards are announced in July and awards are delivered in the Fall.
Various judges from industry judge the competition. Pictured below are the students receiving their awards.

The JHS Debate and Speech team competed at Alpharetta High School's Alpharetta Treasure Hunt Speech and Debate tournament this past Saturday, admirably representing Johnson High in a very large tournament with more than 30 schools total competing. A total of 7 of our students competed, and the following placed very well:
Jessica Collier: 2nd Place Prose Poetry Interpretation; she is now a state qualifier for the GFCA varsity tournament in March.
Peter Fitzpatrick: 2nd place Extemporaneous Speech and 2nd place Impromptu Speech. Both of these divisions were very large and Pete was up against some seriously tough competition. He, too, is a double-qualifier (in both of these events) for the GFCA varsity state tournament in March.
An honorable mention from me goes to Charles Olsen who went and competed last minute not only in Prose Poetry Interpretation for himself, but also as a stand-in for another student who couldn't attend due to family illness in duo interpretation and showed good team spirit throughout the tournament day.
All but one of our competing students have earned at least their merit membership in the National Forensics League and are continuing to build points standings. Peter has earned the honor membership level and is well on his way to the next higher level, too.
Please congratulate these students and any with whom you are familiar who are participating in debate and speech this year. They are truly learning as they go and are doing a great job, and we do appreciate all your support!

The 2nd annual JHS Joust Speech and Debate Tournament was held this past Saturday. Our students did a fine job of being the gracious hosts and also competed in several divisions very well to make our tournament run smoothly. Our students who competed earned many speaker points toward their National Forensic League memberships (students must earn 25 speaker points to become members) and toward lettering in speech and debate (75 speaker points must be earned for this distinction along with consistent, sportsman-like participation in competition and events).
Several community volunteers from the Hall County Optimist Club came as guest judges and to help run the tournament and spoke highly of our school and our students J.
A special thank you goes to Mr. Stan Lewis and our administration for their support, and to Ms. Julie Butterworth, Ms. Jane Kesler, Ms. Jean Prezel, and Ms. Debbie Clark for judging events for us. Also, a special thanks to Ms. Lisa Liuzzi and Ms. Caitlin McHargue for their kind sharing of the leftovers from the United Way kick-off for use in our coaches’ and judges’ hospitality room. Thanks also to Ms. Mary McGovern for allowing us use of rooms 500 and 501 for said hospitality room and to Julie Townley and Marie Beard for allowing us to invade the media center as command central and awards space.
We used classrooms along the math/social studies and the English hallways for competition; thanks to all of you along those halls for allowing us to invade your space J Should anything have been left terribly out of sorts or askew, please let me know ASAP, so we might rectify it as best we can.
Please congratulate any speech and debate students you may know on a job well done.
