Happy New Year Knight Nation,

I trust that you all had a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.  Soon we begin the second semester of this school year, and we are looking forward to great things at Johnson High School.

Parents and students, please remember that grades for each semester are “stand alone grades.”  In other words, first semester’s average cannot be improved upon once the semester ends on January 13th.  That grade will be averaged with the second semester grade, along with final exams and end of course tests in order to calculate final averages for the school year.  The only exception is for half year courses.  After January 13th, those grades are final.

Students have an opportunity to start with a clean slate in the second semester.  Success is possible with a strong work ethic that includes good study habits, communication with teachers, and time management.  Furthermore, living out the tenets of our Knights’ Creed is also critical.  Respect, honesty, personal responsibility, and using one’s talents for the common good will continue to be expectations for all Johnson Knights.

On the extracurricular front, things are going to be very busy in 2014.

Basketball season is underway, and our boys and girls programs are working extremely hard as they compete.  Congratulations to our boys program as it won the coveted Lanierland Tournament in December.  The boys also look to repeat as Region 8AAAA Champs in 2014.  Our wrestling team continues to impress, placing 4thin the recently held area duals.  State competition will be held in February.  Very soon our spring sports will begin:  soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, and track will keep student athletes busy as the weather warms and we draw closer to graduation.

Many of our Knights involved in our CTAE programs will be going to region and state competition for Skills USA.  Johnson High School has performed well in the past and looks to take students to national competition again this summer.

In fine arts, band will be preparing for its Pre-Festival Concert on February 25thand its Large Group Performance Evaluation on March 7th.  Drama will begin preparing for its spring production of Shakespeare’s, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

We had an outstanding fall semester, and I feel confident that the New Year holds great promise for our students, school, and community.  Let us work together as a family and a team to finish the school year strong, using the talents with which we’ve been blessed to build a better future for us all.

Peace be with you and yours, and GoBigBlue!!!
