Johnson High School students recently took home seven first place awards and a third place at the Region 2 SkillsUSA competition held Jan. 17 at North Georgia Technical College.

SkillsUSA supports skill acquisition in the trade, technical and skilled service occupations with more than 300,000 students and advisors participating in its programs each year. It was formerly known as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America.

“Our students placed first in graphic communications, advertising design and photography,” said JHS graphic communications teacher Scott Porter. Johnson’s Career Tech Program students entered 10 competitions at the event.

Students also won awards in plumbing, carpentry, electrical and masonry competitions.

Students who placed first or second, at the region competition, will progress to the state one held in Atlanta March 21 to 23. Those who win there will move on to the national competition.

The SkillsUSA national championship will be June 26-28 in Kansas City, Mo. More than 5,800 contestants are expected to compete in over 130 different skills competitions
