J

ohnson High School is excited to offer students a rigorous, challenging and well-rounded educational experience with an emphasis on internationalism through our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. With our country’s and community’s economies becoming more global in perspective, we feel that our students should not only recognize the importance of understanding one’s own community, but also communities around the world. The programme is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills be successful in high school, college and life.

Benefits for the Students

The IB Diploma Programme at Johnson High School:

  • Offers students a rigorous, pre-university course of study
  • Develops students' critical and analytical thinking skills (learn how to learn)
  • Challenges students to consider and appreciate internationalism both within and beyond their communities and cultures
  • Offers students opportunities to become an active participant in their community through volunteer and service projects
  • Encourages fluency in a second language
  • Offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive, world class curriculum
  • Provides an opportunity to conduct and write an independent research paper to prepare students with the skills to write college-level papers

"UGA is pleased to have applicants who have participated in the IB program.  We have found that students who take the most rigorous classes available at their high school are the most competitive for admissions and best prepared for success at the University of Georgia.  Our experience with students who have completed the IB program, specifically those completing the IB Diploma, has proven that this is very rigorous preparation for college."

Dr. Nancy McDuff

Associate VP for Admissions & Enrollment Mgmt

       University of Georgia

"At Tech, we expect to see that students are taking the most challenging curriculum available to them in high school. Participating and succeeding in the IB program not only demonstrates that a student has significant academic ability, but also a desire to push themselves to learn. Georgia Tech is a challenging place and those who perform at the highest level here are not just bright- they are hard workers and lifelong learners as well. In reviewing a student's transcript, IB courses on the high school level is a great indicator to admissions that the applicant is potentially a good fit. "

Mr. Rick Clark

Director of Undergraduate Admissions

Core Elements of the IB Diploma Programme Curriculum

To help students prepare for the expectations of college and become aware of the positive influence they can have on their own community, the International Studies Program also requires three core elements.

Theory of Knowledge An interdisciplinary course that enables students to reflect critically on the question of “How do we know what we know?”
Creativity, Action & Service Through creative activities, sports, volunteerism, etc., students build confidence in themselves while improving their communities (IBO requires 150 hours of service over students’ junior and senior years)
