• Serving Size: This tells you how much to eat of a food product to get the nutrients supplied in the label.
• Calories: This tells you how many calories are in one serving.  Remember fat-free does not mean calorie free!
• Fat/Cholesterol/Sodlium: This tells you how much fat, cholesterol, and sodium is in one serving. Strive away from foods containing high amounts of saturated and trans-fat. Monitor sodium content because it is recommended we get approximately 2300mg/day.
• Carbohydrates: Both fiber and sugar are types of carbohydrate and are found in foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.  To increase the amount of fiber in your diet, look for whole grains, like whole wheat bread, brown rice, and whole (rolled) oats.
• Vitamins & Minerals: Look for foods with high amounts of these nutrients, so you can get the most nutrition for your calories.
• Protein: Most of us get plenty of protein, but choose proteins that are lean, low-fat, or fat free.
• % Daily Value: This helps you link the nutrients in one serving to your total daily diet.  If a food contains less than 5%, it is low in that nutrient.  If a food contains more than 20%, it is high in that nutrient.
