Guidelines for Outdoor Practices in Extreme Heat PDF Print
Monday, 02 July 2012

The Hall County School District has put in place (07/01/2012) new guidelines for outdoor practices in extreme heat in compliance with GHSA BY-LAW 2.67 – “Practice Policy for Heat and Humidity.”   These new guidelines were formulated as a result of a two year study the GHSA (Georgia High School Association) did with the Sports Medicine staff of the University of Georgia to establish uniform guidelines for student-athlete safety in practicing in extreme heat.

Although GHSA only applies to high school athletics, Hall County Schools will apply these guidelines to our middle school programs as well.  All middle and high schools have been provided with the state approved WBGT (Wet Blub Global Temperature) devices to take accurate measures of outdoor conditions, which will provide the guidance for the type of practice allowed based on the WBGT reading.

The policy shall follow modified guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine in regard to:
1. The scheduling of practices at various heat/humidity levels
2. The ratio of workout time to time allotted for rest and hydration at various heat/humidity levels
3. The heat/humidity level that will result in practice being terminated

A scientifically approved instrument that measures Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) reading must be utilized at each practice to ensure that the written policy is being followed properly.
