Chestatee and Flowery Branch Named to State's Advanced Placement Honor Schools

On February 7, 2012, State School Superintendent John Barge named the state's Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools. In making the announcement Superintendent Barge said, "Georgia has much to be proud of when it comes to the success of Advanced Placement.  Much of this success can be attributed to the dedication to rigor and excellence at each of our AP Honor Schools." 

Advanced Placement (AP) classes and exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit.

Marketing Students Win at DECA Regionals

Hall County marketing education students competed at DECA Region Competition on January 26th.  Students placing 1st - 3rd will advance on to the State Competition in Atlanta, February 23-25. Assisting in the coordination of the events and at the Awards Session were three Hall County State Officers:  KayLynn Samples, Chestatee High, Executive Vice President; Ellie Forrester, Lanier Charter Career Academy, Vice President, Finance; and Hunter Gibbs, Lanier Charter Career Academy, Vice President, Business Partnerships.

WLA 2nd Grade Class Wins National Video Contest

ACTFL(The American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages) has announced that the video entitled, Many Languages, Only One Heart by Mrs. Ruby Castro’s second grade class at WLA has been selected as the national winner (Elementary Division) in the national student video contest to celebrate Discover Languages month during February.

2012 SkillsUSA Region Contest Winners

On January 26, 2012, North Georgia Technical College hosted nearly 300 SkillsUSA contestants from high schools across the Northeast Georgia area. The theme for this year was “Champions at Work:  Skilled and Motivated.” 

The idea relates to the national program of work and how SkillsUSA fosters personal and professional development, to prepare students for the next phase of their lives.

S-T-E-P-T-O-E Wins 2012 Hall County Spelling Bee

Sabrina Steptoe, a seventh grade student at Davis Middle School, is the Hall County School District Spelling Bee Champion for 2012.  On the morning of January 31, Ms. Steptoe won out over 32 other contestants representing 22 schools throughout the district. 

The correct spelling of the word typhoon earned Steptoe the title. Ms. Suzanne Jarrard, Ms. Tracy Kell, and Ms. Jennifer Kogod of Chestatee Academy facilitated the Spelling Bee which took place at the Oaks, LCCA and was moderated by B.J. Williams, Jacobs Media News Director.

Nikki Dulaney, a fifth grade student at Friendship Elementary, was first runner-up.  Both Steptoe and Carr will advance to district competition in February.

Kiwanis Announces 2012 STAR Student-Teacher Luncheon

Gainesville Kiwanis will once again sponsor the local tribute to our STAR Students and STAR Teachers.  This year's event will be Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at noon at the Gainesville Elks Club.  Each of our city and county high schools' STAR Students and STAR Teachers will be recognized and given a framed certificate.  In addition the System STAR Students and STAR Teachers will be announced for the city system and the county system.
