Dr. Mary Parks, who dedicated thirty-eight (38) years of her life to the care and education of the children of Hall County, has died at the age of sixty-one from cancer.

Principal Beth Hudgins has received notification that Myers Elementary is being awarded a $100,000 grant from Target. Myers is one of fifty (50) schools across the nation to receive the grant, but the only school in Georgia.

At the January 23, 2012 meeting of the Hall County Board of Education, Transportation Director Jewel Armour announced that the school system is preparing fueling stations to accommodate 20 LP (liquid propane) fueled buses to the fleet. These buses, which take advantage of abundant natural resources, will be less expensive to operate and less harmful to the enviroment than traditional school buses.

Congratulations to the Hall County School District HOSA students who recently competed at Region 7 Competitive Events. These students have earned the right to compete at the 2012 State HOSA Conference, which will begin on March 1, 2012 in Athens, Georgia, and run through March 3. HOSA, Health Occupation Students of America, is an organization for students interested in career fields related to medicine and health occupations.

On the evening of January 17, 2012, veteran North Hall High agriculture instructor Johnny Sutton was honored by the Georgia FFA (Future Farmers of America) Alumni Association by being inducted into the Georgia Agriculture Education Hall of Fame. The event, which took place at Mobley Hall in Covington, Georgia, recognized five long-time educators, who, through their dedicated service, have had a positive impact on the children of Georgia through agriculture education.

On Janurary 17, 2012 at the state capitol, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal launched a program called "Go Build Georgia." Among those on hand to help the Governor to launch this important initiative were students from across the state who are interested in careers in skilled trades. This group included students from the Hall County School District high schools' construction classes.
Deal was joined at the Statehouse by political, union and business leaders, including Georgia Power CEO W. Paul Bowers. He said the utility company has need for 5,000 craft laborers, including some working to build a new nuclear power plant near Augusta. State officials estimate that more than 16,000 jobs will become available over the next year for skilled laborers.

“The Innovation Institute – i-squared, Rising 9th Graders at WHHS
TCustomized programs of study emphasize in-depth learning in areas of interest, preparing participants for success in WHHS’s IB Diploma Program, AP courses and/or Honors Mentorship Program. Using the Innovation Research Facility, students use some of the most advanced technology available to students in Hall County to extend their educational experience. While I-squared is an intentional extension of the Da Vinci Academy learning environment, students from any middle school in Hall County can apply. Students are selected based on evidence of their achievement, motivation to excel, creativity, curiosity, resourcefulness and maturity.
Application are due by February 10, 2012.

On January 18, 2012, Hall County Habitat for Humanity held official ground breaking ceremonies for the 9th Habitat Home to be constructed by Habitat High students. Habitat High is the Hall County School District program that brings students from throughout the county interested in construction through Lanier Charter Career Academy to build homes for deserving families. Students not only learn valuable, hands-on experiences in all phases of home construction, but also gain the satisfaction of knowing they have built something of lasting value to a family.
