Math Counts

The Math Counts program is a school-wide program to promote mastery in a variety of math skills.  Students pass tests according to grade level to earn awards.  Milestones for each grade are summarized.

 

 

Goals By Grade Level

1st Grade

1st Grade Goals

Level 1: 1/4 page addition 0-6 in one minute to earn a certificate and magnet

Level 2:  1/2 page addition 0-10 in two minutes to earn a pencil and eraser

Level 3: 1/4 page subtraction 0-6 in one minute to earn a free ice cream

Level 4: 1/2 page addition 1-18 in two minutes to earn a bendable toy

Level 5: Full page addition to 19 and subtraction to 6 in four minutes to earn a T-shirt

2nd Grade Goals

Level 1: 1/2 page addition facts 0-9 in two minutes to earn a certificate award with seal

Level 2: 1/2 page addition facts 0-18 in two minutes to earn a seal on certificate and blow pop

Level 3: 1/2 page subtraction facts 0-9 in two minutes to earn seal on certificate and pencil with eraser

Level 4: 1/2 page subtraction facts 0-18 in two minutes to earn seal on certificate and a free ice cream

Level 5: Full page (60 facts) addition and subtraction 0-18 in four minutes.  Students can miss no more than 2 of 60 facts to earn a Math Counts T-shirt

3rd Grade Goals

Level 1: 100 addition problems in 5 minutes with 95% correct to earn a star

Level 2:  100 subtraction problems in 5 minutes with 95% correct to earn a star

Level 3: Series of 1 minute tests for each multiplication table.  Each test consists of facts 0-12 for each number. 

  1. After students pass 4s they earn a piece of candy
  2. After students pass 8s they earn a pencil / eraser
  3. After students pass 12s they earn an ice cream and a certificate
Level 4: Mastery Multiplication Test with 100 problems in 5 minutes.  With at least 95% correct students earn a Math Counts T-shirtAfter earning a T-shirt students can proceed to division facts and earn prizes  If students pass the Division Mastery, they begin learning States & Capitals.

4th Grade Goals

Level 1: 20 addition problems in 1 minute

Level 2: 20 subtraction problems in 1 minute to receive a certificate

Level 3: 20 multiplication problems in 1 minute to earn a Gold Star on Certificate

Level 4: 20 division problems in 1 minute to earn a Math Counts T-shirt

After earning a T-shirt students can proceed to division facts and earn prizes  If students pass the Division Mastery, they begin learning States & Capitals and Presidents.

5th Grade Goals

Level 1: Mastery of multiplication and division facts (20 problems) with 95% accuracy on timed tests.  Certificate is placed outside classroom door as students complete this level.

Level 2: Mastery of long division (four digit by one digit) and multiplication problems (three digit by two digit) with 80% accuracy on a ten-problem test.  Students will earn a seal on their certificate and the student's name will be placed on a bulletin board.

Level 3: Successfully complete math test covering selected fifth grade objectives with 85% accuracy.  Students completing this level will earn a Math Counts t-shirt.

Please stay tuned on your radio to WDUN AM 55 for school closings during inclement weather. These announcements are usually placed on the air between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. Announcements are made on the Hall County School website as well. Staff members should check e mails regularly during inclement weather.
