At Myers Elementary the students have the unique opportunity to experience learning in many different environments outside the traditional classroom setting. Teachers and students can experience life up close and personal in our Outdoor Classroom, Endangered Pitcherplant Bog, Butterfly Garden or the "Dragons Trail" Nature Trail.
Outdoor Classroom
In 2000 Myers Elementary School developed the Outdoor Classroom so students could witness life in action. The O.C. is a wonderful living laboratory, which enables students to learn in many ways. The hands-on approach to learning benefits students with many different learning styles. The Outdoor Classroom can be used for many subjects not just science.
By planting flowers, watching insects and listening to the sounds of nature students will develop a connection to nature. Many of our students seldom get the opportunity at home to go out and get their hands in the earth. The experience gained in the Outdoor Classroom can develop into a life long hobby.
The O.C. is equipped with garden tools, gloves, outdoor microscopes and magnifiers of many types. A faux river runs through the classroom complete with rocks of various sizes and types. An area with picnic tables underneath a canopy allows students to work outside even in rainy weather. There are many native species of bushes and plants which allow for an excellent habitat for birds and other creatures.
A special thanks goes to our Outdoor Classroom sponsors: Wayne Farms, Simpson Trucking, Candler Concrete, Hanson Aggregates, Little Woodall Supply Company, Oakwood Ace Hardware, Limestone Construction, Walnut Creek Sod, Lowe's, Outdoor Environments, Rainwater Landscaping, and Airport Trailer Service.

Endangered Pitcherplant Bog
Our bog became a reality in May 2004 with the help of the State Botanical Garden in Athens and Elachee Nature Science Center. The bog was constructed and planted by 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. It is home to three different species of pitcherplants and bog flowers. These plants provide an excellent opportunity for our students to study "carnivorous" (meat eating) plants and make comparisons with traditional plants.

Carol Millwood Memroial Butterfly Garden
The Myers Elementary Butterfly Garden was built as a memorial to Mrs. Carol Millwood in 1994. The garden was sponsored by the South Hall Optimist Club and was built by a parent volunteer. The Butterfly Garden has been used to provide a hands-on environment for the study of butterflies, other insects and hummingbirds.
The plants included, such as butterfly bushes, passion flower, black-eyed susans, and parsley, provide a rich environment for the attraction and reproduction of butterflies.
Every spring students add flowering annuals to help attract butterflies as well as hummingbirds.
Dragon Trails Nature Trail
The trail was developed during the mid 1990's and winds through the forest and along Little Walnut creek behind Myers Elementary School . Students can see many trees and plants that are native to Georgia. Our nature trail has been forturnate to serve as a site for an Eagle Scout project. This project provided us with benches under a beautiful Box Elder tree that serves as additional outdoor classroom space. The creek provides many opportunities for students to conduct Adopt-a-Stream testing. These chemical and biological tests help to monitor the health of Little Walnut creek.
