Dear Parents,
Welcome to another exciting year at McEver Elementary School! We are really proud to announce that our school was awarded The CHARACTER THROUGH THE ARTS GRANT. This grant provides funds and resources to expose our students to additional programs and opportunities in the arts as well as emphasizing the importance of good character. Our school has also been recognized once again for making AYP (5 consecutive years) and has been honored as a DISTINGUISHED TITLE I SCHOOL by the State of Georgia for Academic Achieverment. We are proud of our students and the McEver TEAM!
We will continue to promote different ways for you to get involved in your child’s education. A program we started last year at our school was our Parent Involvement Program. This program offers workshops for parents called SNACK AND LEARNS. These workshops will focus on helping students with homework, organization, study skills, and improving academic achievement. It also provides a place for parents to come together and become a part of the McEver TEAM. We recruiting parents to volunteer for PTO Events as well as to help out in the school this year. Please plan on working at our Fall Festival, Yard Sale, Family Fun Nights, and our Mustang Mile. Parent Involvement is important for every child’s success!
Another way for you to get involved with your child’s learning at home is by helping your child achieve their reading and math goals. Our teachers have worked with your child to set specific reading and math goals. These are lofty, yet obtainable goals based on what we know they are capable of accomplishing. Please set aside a time and a place for your child to work on homework and toward their personal academic goals. To help your child succeed, set high expectations, support their efforts, and hold them accountable for their learning.
Below are some strategies that will help your child become a better reader:
- Listen to your child read,
- Read to your child,
- Ask questions about what they just read (summary) and what is going to happen next (prediction),
- Keep track and chart minutes spent reading,
- Preview the book with your child by looking at pictures, identifying setting, characters, and events,
- Use the dictionary to look up new words,
- Let your child see you reading!
You can also help your child succeed in math:
- Make flash cards with math facts and review daily,
- Chart their progress,
- Use measurement, time, and money in meaningful ways
- Make connections for them in real life situations ( ie. At the grocery store, counting change, measuring things, telling time and calculating lapsed time).
You are your child’s first teacher and continue to make a major impact on their academic success. We need your help and hope that you get involved with our school. Our mission is T.E.A.M. and it stands for Teaching Everyone At McEver. We believe that by working together, we can make a difference!
On behalf of the entire McEver Staff, we look forward to working with you and providing another exciting year for the children of McEver!
Sincerely,
Catherine Rosa
