Award Winning Books

Georgia Children's Book Award
The award is given in two categories – picture books and middle grade novels. Books are nominated for the awards by teachers and media specialists from the state of Georgia. Students have the opportunity to read or have these books read to them throughout the year. In March, the students vote and the books receiving the most votes are submitted to the University of Georgia (UGA) where the the winning book is determined and announce at the annual Conference on Children’s Literature held at UGA in April.

McEver students will be voting in March for their favorite Picture Book, so be sure to enjoy ten or more of the picture book nominees so you can be a part of the GA book award voting! For fun activities relating to this year's nomiee's check out this great site!

Newbery Award
The Newbery Medal is awarded each year to the author with the greatest contribution to children's literature.  The award was named after John Newbery, the first publisher of children's periodicals. 

Caldecott Award
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to an illustrator of the most outstanding picture book.  The award was named after Randolph Caldecott, one of the most distinguished English illustrators of his time.

Coretta Scott King Award
This award is presented annually to a black author and illustrator whose works promote world unity and peace and serve as an inspiration to young people.  It honors Mrs. King for her courage and determination.

Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards
Given annually since 1967 by the Boston Globe & Horn Book Magazine. Through 1975 two awards given-for outstanding text and for outstanding illustrations. Since 1976 awards are: outstanding fiction or poetry; outstanding nonfiction; outstanding illustration.

Book Sense Book of the Year Award (formerly The ABBY Award)
American Booksellers Children's Book of the Year.

Children's Book Award (Josette Frank Award)
From Bank Street Children's Book Committee. Given annually since 1943, the award for fiction honors a book or books of outstanding literary merit in which children or young people deal in a positive and realistic way with difficulties in their world and grow emotionally and morally.; site also has awards for poetry and nonfiction.

Parents' Choice Awards
Awards in print and nonprint categories.

Young Reader's Choice Award
Given by Pacific Northwest Library Association to promote reading for enjoyment. Children select winners.
