Accelerated Reader Books and Reading Levels Students may select from a great number of books to read that are part of the A.R. system. The A.R. books in McEver Elementary’s Media Center are marked with an orange dot on the spine of the book. Books you have at home or check out from the public library may also be part of the A.R. system. A list of A.R. books can be found in the Media Center and online (see links above). Books should be selected at or above the student’s reading level. Accelerated Reader Quizzes and PointsOnce a student has finished reading a book, he or she can take an A.R. quiz. The quiz consists of multiple-choice questions about the book. Most picture books will have a quiz with five to ten questions that will earn the student up to one point. Chapter books will have ten to twenty questions and will be worth more points based on the level of difficulty. Even if a student does not answer all the questions correctly on the quiz, he or she can still earn some points if a majority of the quests are answered correctly. Accelerated Reader Student IncentivesStudents will work towards their yearly goal of 100% (see chart below) Throughout the year students will be rewarded as they reach a percentage of their yearly goal. When a student reaches their 25% goal they will get to choose a small prize. At 50% they will get to have their picture taken and displayed in the media center. At 75% of their goal they will get a special AR water bottle. Students who meet their 100% goal will get to partake in our annual AR Ice Cream Party. Students who go above and beyond will get a special recognition at the end of the year and have their name added to the X-treme Reader Hall of Fame. The Accelerated Reader Program is a great way to motivate, monitor, and guide reading practice so that each student's reading ability continually improves. Thusly, the teachers, students, and families work as a team to help the Accelerated Reader Program continue to make reading fun and meaningful.
