McEver Elementary School’s School Improvement Plan for 2006-2007

I.  Target Area:  Reading/ Language Arts

Measurable Objectives:

 

 All Students will raise achievement in Reading 1st– 5th grades from 75% meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2005 to 80 % meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2007 as measured by the Reading Totals of the CRCT with a minimum of 95% participation for all subgroups. 

Students in the LEP subgroup will raise achievement in Reading/English Language Arts in 3rd– 5th grades from  61% meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2006 to 70% meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2007 as measured by the average Reading& Language Arts Totals.

      Specific domains and subgroups to address: Reading for Meaning, Locating and Recall Information, and Grammar/Mechanics

      Factors affecting student achievement to address (Title I schools only) – % of ELLs 

      Reading Intervention for 1st grade (1st semester) and 2nd grade (2 semester).  Small Group for students in 2nd ,3r grade, 4th (1st and 2nd semester).

Focus on the training and implementation of  Guided Reading strategies, Literacy Centers, and Conferencing with Students utilizing Differentiation in the classroom for grades K-2 (C,R)

Check-out and use of Level Book Materials, Implementation of Literacy Centers in the classroom,  Peer Observation Sheets, Feedback on Demonstration Lessons/  Improvements as measured by Reading Measures (DRA, DIBBLES, IRIs) and scores on the CRCT in Reading.

Implementing Word Building Strategies utilizing Best Practices at each grade level (C,R)

August 2006- May 2007

All Teachers, Instructional Coach

Workshop will be provided by Instructional Coach for all teachers on using word building strategies in 4 Blocks for upper grades, word attack skills, and word pattern resources./ Release time.  All materials have been purchased  

Word lists parked in the classroom that use word families, thematic, and tiered word lists / Increase in scores as measured by the vocabulary strand on the CRCT.

Continue with the training of teachers in Georgia R.I.S.E. and monitoring the implementation of R.I.S.E for those previously trained.  Goal is to identify students who need additional reading support and provide support through Reading Intervention, Boost, Team Time Tutoring, or peer tutoring. (C)

Instructional Coach, R.I.S.E. trained teachers, K - 2nd grade teachers, Reading Intervention Teacher and Administrators

Training will provided by our instructional coach.  In addition, R.I.S.E. Review training will also be provided/ Expenditures include the R.I.S.E. materials, Release time for 2nd grade and ESOL teachers (5 half days) which has been provided by the county.

GA R.I.S.E. Assessments, DIBELS 3 times per year for students in K-2, Implementation of strategies/ Participants’ work samples and completing course requirements.

Train teachers and students on the strategies used to improve reading comprehension through Reciprocal Teaching. (C)

Literacy Coach, Teachers in grades 3-5

Training will be provided by our instructional coach utilizing novel sets, Leveled readers, and adopted reading series. / Reading money and other grants will be used to support this goal.   

 

Student writing about what they read/ scores on reading tests, DRA will measure progress, and scores on comprehension in Study Island and formative assessments quarterly/ Reading Comprehension scores on the CRCT for EIP students.

Journaling Across the Curriculum (R)

August 2006- May 2007

Instructional Coach, GPS Reading/Language Arts Leaders, Teachers

LA Writing Workshop for all teachers on writing across the curriculum.utilizing the Writing to Win and 6 +1 Journal Writing Strategies/ Materials have been purchased.  Release time.

Student Journals/ Writing Assessments in 3rd and 5th

Implementation of Reading Campaigns at all grade levels each semester with support from the PTO, Partners in Education, Parents, and Teachers.  (R)

Each semester includes a goal and a celebration for students reaching their goal.

Joint effort between students, parents, and teachers.  Media Staff supports these efforts by managing the Accelerated Reader Program.

Management system for tracking reading each night; contract between parent, students, and teachers, and training parent on building comprehension skills./ Reading materials, business partner grants, PTO funding, Agendas.

Students will focus on raising achievement in Numeration & Computation / Number Sense & Estimation

in grade(s) 3 to 5 increasing Math Scores from 79% meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2006 to 84% meeting or exceeding standard at the end of SY2007 as measured by the GA CRCT with a minimum of 95% participation for all subgroups.
