What Parents Can Do at Home  (Study Skills 101)

1.  Provide a good work space.  Provide them with a quiet, uncluttered place for them to study, "it sends a powerful message that homework is valued."
2.  Respect different work styles...some children need a break after school, while others prefer to power through homework.  Figure out what works best for them and stick to a consistent schedule.
3. Experiment with different study aids...An example: Most students are taught to highlight important passages in the assigned reading or make small notes in the margin.  Find out what jogs a child's memory and use that strategy.
4.  Give lots of feedback...have your child solve problems or answer questions five or so at a time, then check the work.  This will help spot errors before the entire assignment is completed.
5.  Zero in on good work first...it's especially important to point out what they did right.
6.  Help your child get organized...when it comes to big projects that can take hours, have them set priorities of importance and not wait until the last minute to finish the project.  This will cause you and your child a tremendous amount of stress.
